$250 car
my first car was a 1982 chevy chevette that ran on diesel fuel. it got 52 mpg and $2 could last me a week. 2 weeks after i bought the car, the starter quit working in it so i had to push start the car by putting it into second gear and getting speed by pushing the damn thing. if a friend wanted a ride, they had to help me push it to get it up to speed. one day, a group of my friends rode with me into school and while we (or should i say ‘they’) were getting the vehicle up to speed, a girl broke her foot by the car running it over. i wasn’t aware that she hurt herself until days later.
that car got me everywhere.
because it ran on diesel, it sounded like chitty-chitty bang-bang and ran like it was powered by hamsters. the damn thing couldn’t get out of its own way, but i didn’t care. it didn’t bother me that one of the quarter-panels were maroon while the rest of the car was beige. the starter did bother me though, especially when i had to start the sucker when i didn’t have much of a running start (i loved hills) or when it was raining.
one day, while at work, i slammed my door shut and shattered my window. immediately thereafter, my door wouldn’t shut at all and i had to tie it shut by using a piece of rope.
on thanksgiving, i was going to visit my mom at her house with my best friend, a car rear-ended me doing 50 mph, effectively totaling my car. the bastard who hit me didn’t have a drivers license, registration, or immigration papers. to top it all off, he was drunk as hell. the impact of the collision was so great that my homemade subwoofer box broke the back seat, and i had the chevy insignia emboldened on my chest—never mind the whiplash i suffered. my radio also came COMPLETELY out of the chassis and landed on the back seat.
after the accident, i tried to open my door but was unable because the frame was bent but it effectively fixed my rope problem.
in the end, the insurance company gave me $800 for a car that originally cost $250.
